16/8/08 Captains' Charity Day a Huge Success......and it stayed dry!

The weather was kind for the Club Captain and Lady Captain of Newbury & Crookham on Saturday 16th August for their Charity Day, as the threatened heavy rain never materialised and conditions stayed dry throughout.   The team format caused quite a bit of fun, each team consisting of 4 players with 2 scores to count on the 1st 6 holes, 3 on the 2nd 6 and all 4 on the final 6.   An early round from Hugh Turley, Mike Batsford, Malcolm Young and Neil Rawlings set the pace with a blistering 121 points but later in the day Dave & Juliet Catt, playing with Ray and Maureen Key beat it with 122.   This was equalled by Ray Summersby, Malcom Drew, Keith Parsons and John Martin, who took the trophy by virtue of a better back 9 holes.   John Martin helped their cause considerably with a hole in one at the 17th, although the ensuing bar bill did his wallet no good at all.   Nearest the pin prizes were won by John Martin (naturally) and David Finch. The golf was followed by a BBQ and auction in the evening and almost £6,000 was raised on the day for Riding for the Disabled, Juvenile Diabetes and the Alzheimer’s Society.

10/8/08 George Todd & Linda Hunt win Club Chapmionships

In a rain affected Jack Hughes Club Championship at Newbury & Crookham on Sunday 10th August, George Todd prevented Club Champion Nick Woodage from taking a coveted 5th title in a row to break the 40 year old record set by Christopher Ball back in the 1960s.

The 36 holes scratch championship decides the club champion for the next year and also the fate of the 2 salvers for 4 to 9 handicappers and 10 to 18 handicappers. Also played concurrently is the Jack Hughes Seniors’ Memorial Trophy, which goes to the best performance from an over 55.

Todd shot a 73 in the first round, including a double bogey on the par 5 13th hole, one ahead of a clutch of golfers including Dean Mavis, James Foster, Stuart Minton and Woodage. Despite the setback at the 13th, Todd held the round together, finishing the last 4 holes one under par, a tribute to his nerve and tenacity. By the end of the 1st 9 of the 2nd round, Todd had increased his lead over Woodage to 2 shots, with the other competitors fading away, only Foster staying in touch with the leaders. Todd drew further ahead with a birdie on the 10th and continued to lead right to the end, despite bogies on 17 and 18, giving him and aggregate score of 145 to Woodage’s 147. Foster was a further 2 shots behind with 149 and took the salver for 4 to 9 handicappers. Mark Berry won the 10 to 18 salver and Roy Belfield the Seniors.

The ladies’ scratch championship on the preceding Saturday had suffered even more in the wet weather, particularly in the afternoon, when heavy showers disrupted play.  Despite the poor conditions and a scrappy first 18 holes, Linda Hunt powered her way to her 3rd championship in a row and her 4th in 5 years with an excellent afternoon round of 76, making her aggregate score 155, beating her nearest competitor Lady Captain Jo Russ by 6 clear shots. Jo’s compensation was to win the Ladies Silver Salver, also over 36 holes and played concurrently with the scratch championship.

The Bronze Salver for the higher handicap ladies was played over 27 holes and was won by Jenny Bell who shot net 76 in the morning and net 28 in the 9 hole afternoon session.
