Captains’ Charity Day
What follows is the presentation speech that I had written for the prize presentation following the Captains’ Charity Day event.
With tee times starting at 08:00, it was inevitable that few people would stay to see in the last group at 18:30 and so I decided to just give a brief speech (much to everyone’s relief) and to put this Captains’ News update together for wider circulation.
Captain’s words:
I would like to start with thanks from Ladies Captain Kerry and myself to everyone that has made today so successful, thank you all.
Everyone that so generously contributed to our Tombola and those that made cash donations, thank you so much.
Thanks too go to our reception desk managers: Barbara Lamb, Pat Frith, Paul Hawker, Deirdre Cuthbert, Charles Grieve, Phillip Hadfield and Peter Mooney.
Thanks to our “Putters”, Richard Potter, David McTurk, Jeff Van Doorn, Susy Chellam and Derek Inglut, great job people!
A special thank you to David Gale who successfully managed to get so many 4 ball vouchers for our Silent Auction, the closing date is now Wednesday 12th at 10am, so get those bids in.
These events place a huge load on Gareth and his team and we are so grateful for their hard work in making this such a success. To name a few – starting with Gareth who always comes through for us all, to Sam and Phillipa, James, Linda and Corinna and our score master President Tony Hammond, thank you all.
And of course, everyone else that helped on the day and finally a special thankyou to Norma Kirby and her ladies for once again looking after us at the halfway hut, I hear that the Pimms was particularly welcome.
I should also mention Tracy and Lee and their team of willing volunteers from Bridge for Young People who supported us all day.
On a personal note, I am so pleased (but maybe not surprised) by the contribution that our members have made in support of Kerry and I. What a generous bunch!
So, to winners and prizes, and thank you to John Eburne who funded the individual winner’s prizes:
I will start with the Ladies nearest the pin on the third.
Unfortunately, due to a mistake that saw one of our male players putting his name on the Ladies nearest the pin card, we decided not to award the prize this time. However, we have decided to present the prize to Val Watson who achieved a magnificent hole in one on the 6th today, and generously made a significant contribution to the Charity fund rather than cash behind the bar, thanks Val.
Gents nearest the pin on the 9th.
I was at the halfway hut watching shots to the green on the 9th and saw Gary Rinaldi’s shot onto the green stopping 23 cm from the hole. I figured that apart from a hole in one, no one could beat that! Great shot Gary.
Nearest the marker was a real challenge and with a great shot, Sean Curry managed to get 3.5 yards from the post, well done Sean.
Now we come to Spot the Ball and thanks to Paul Seivers for the photograph and board.
I think many of you knew about my Captain’s Drive In (enough said) and as a consequence we had a lot of short and low guesses. Wrong! I actually hit it quite well and Gordon Douglas got it right with S08, a number of people guessed adjacent spots but Gordon was the only one that got it right.
Putting was interesting, rather a lot of zero points and for a long time a great score of 55 was achieved by Dave Middlemas and Derek Nutley, then beaten by Paul Johnson with 75 who was finally beaten by an unbelievable 115 – yes 115 – by Roy Belfield, I hope his putting on the course is as good.
The Charity Parking space was won by Martin Herring, congratulations Martin but you should be aware this doesn’t include windscreen insurance!!
And finally, our competition results.
In third place with an excellent 47 points were Val and Keith Watson, pipped by Paul Waldon and Kevin Rowe with 48 points in second place.
Our overall winners, with an exceptional 52 (how many) points were Daniel and Karen Yeo, a great score in what were tricky conditions.
So, to conclude, thank you everyone for making today such a success. We still have the silent auction and we are looking for contribution matching but our estimate for the amount we achieved from today will be in the order of £7,500. What an achievement, thank you all.
