HILLMAN TROPHY WINNERS

It has been a busy week at Newbury & Crookham Golf Club with several competitions either taking place or knockout competitions culminating in finals.

The Newbury & Crookham golf club Hillman Trophy team played Hinksey Heights in the final at Goring & Streatley GC. Having finished as runners up in 2024, Newbury were keen to go one step further this year.

All the matches were close for the first few holes as the teams got going and with the greens running at lightning pace advantage would go to the team who acclimatised first.

The first two matches to return to the clubhouse were wins for Hinksey Heights but the back end of the team fought well, and the outcome of the match was a 5-2 win for Newbury & Crookham.

Huge congratulations to the team on the day of Paul Pantanella, Doug Terry, Lee Gourlay, Sean Sargeant, Neil Devery, Tony Ruczynski and Charlie McCready and to the team members who played previous rounds but could not make the final. Big thankyou also to all the caddies Mike Lennon, John Thorogood, Johnny Miller, Jamie McCready, Matty Mavis and Hughie Whorriskey who played their part in the victory.

Congratulations also to team Captain/Manager Paul Hutchings and on course help Dave Middlemas, Phil Piper, Richard Stewart& Mike Hutchins. It has been a long 26 years with some near misses on the way since their last win but they are looking forward to defending the title next year.

L-R Front Sean Sargeant, Paul Hutchings (Captain) Tony Ruczynski. L-R Back Doug Terry, Neil Devery, Paul Pantanella, Lee Gourlay and Charlie McCready.

BAXENDAL BOWL

The Women played their Baxendale Bowl on 20th September 2025. The competition produced a thrilling finish with both Alison Dunks and Jill Owen carding fine rounds of nett 72 to share top spot. Miwa Beer finished close behind in third with a nett 74. A playoff between Alison and Jill will be required to decide the ultimate winner.

The David Harris Medal also saw some superb scoring. Matt Talmage claimed the win with an outstanding nett 59, highlighted by a remarkable personal best for Matt with a gross 67. David Lyons and Richard Muldoon both finished on nett 64, normally good enough to win any other competition, with David taking second place on countback. Congratulations to Matt on a fantastic victory.

Fourball Knockout Final between Carl Gorman & Tom Moffatt and Mikey O’Neil & Craig Butler proved to be an epic encounter. Mikey and Craig held a 3-up lead after the first 18-holes, but by the end of 36-hole match, it was back to all square. In dramatic fashion, the contest went to a sudden death 37th hole, where Carl and Tom emerged victorious by holing a 6ft putt to complete the turnaround win.

Jean & Whitley Foursomes Final was played on the same day and was contended for by Jo Russ & Anita Lockyer and Nicky Russo & Philipa Spencer-Ades. Despite receiving three shots, Jo and Anita were on top from the very start, playing steady and confident golf as they holed numerous key putts. Despite Nicky & Philipa’s best efforts, Jo & Anita’s dominance on the greens carried them to a convincing 6&5 win.

The winner of the singles matchplay, Ronaldshay Cup, was Charlie McCready overcoming fellow Hillman Trophy team mate Paul Pantanella in a 36 hole final.
