The staff and members played their annual match on Friday evening. The match has been played every year since 2003 with the staff only having won it once, in 2009, and halved it once, in 2006.
You can imagine that the expectations weren’t up to much as the staff lined up on the first tee but the match got off to a strong start with Liz Deaney getting the better of Penny Maughan in the first match for the staff. Amanda Fisher and Chris Ball managed a very good half against Peter Clements and Anne Hornby and Sam Spencer-Ades and Philipa Saich strolled to victory in the third match….the stage was set, all that was needed was a at least a half in the fourth match for the staff to record a memorable victory, sadly Gareth Williams and Dave Bartholomew took a sound thrashing to keep the match alive for the members.
The staff needn’t have worried though because they had the extremely strong pair of Joel Jervis and Alex Hicks playing the all important final match and they both played superbly well to overcome Dave Middlemass and Val Watson to win their game and record a memorable victory for the staff – 3 1/2 1 1/2.
